VOLUNTEER NETWORK

VOLUNTEER VISITORS

The volunteer visitors scheme provides a service to anyone considering amputation or who has recently undergone an amputation. The visitors offer an opportunity to talk confidentially with someone who has had a similar experience. The volunteers are not “experts” who are there to solve problems, they are people with a limb loss or absence, who have themselves and their experience to share.

FREEPHONE HELPLINE

The telephone helpline was initially established as a support network for the families and carers of those with limb loss or absence. For many people the biggest issue was the sense of isolation they experienced when returning home from hospital, and for that reason it was felt that a telephone helpline would be the best way to make contact with those in a similar situation. In addition, many people are unable to leave those in their care or are perhaps limited by a lack of transport, so again, the helpline can provide a link to the help and support they require.

Over time it has developed into a resource that is used by both the public and healthcare professionals alike. If we are unable to help personally, then we will try our utmost to pass you onto another agency or organisation that is better suited to your needs.

PARENT CONTACT GROUP

If you are the parent of a child who has a limb absence or who has had an amputation as a result of trauma or illness, then you may find it beneficial to talk to other parents in a similar situation.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

All of the MF volunteers have undergone a 6-day training course – 4 days on counselling & listening skills with an additional 2 days looking at the rehabilitation process itself. They are governed by their own Code of Ethics & Practice with the Foundation making a firm commitment to on-going training and supervision.

Please contact the Foundation if you would like to speak with any of our volunteers
